As I made room for myself with a little Curiosity R&R, I wanted to memorialize the month.
“Time for another photo challenge,” I thought. “Focus on the light!”
Especially this time of year as it dwindles, sunlight feels precious. Paying attention to its beauty, every day — in purposeful and/or stolen moments — proves delightful.
Lesson learned: go looking for (de)light and you’ll find it.
#DecemberDeLight
December 1: Sun glows through dried Mandarin oranges. Smelled great as they “cooked” for hours!December 2: The rising sun catches an ornament on the Christmas treeDecember 3: Plant shadows + glass wall = wonderful abstract design.December 4: Morning sky reflected in that same glass wall.December 5: I loved the strong light on this cold & blustery day.December 6: Look at how the light hits the bridge — and the truck.
No surprise, as I go looking for light, I see all sorts of other things. The brave blue iris holding forth against a southern wall, even as the rest of the garden has lapsed into winter quiet. The kitschy holiday decorations hidden in plain sight. The darkness. There is no appreciating light without also appreciating the dark.
December 7: The slanting light accentuates textures.December 8: We outline with dark marks, the sun with light.December 9: Oh, the measures we go to to capture the light.December 10: Flat flat flat light today. But without light, there is no reflection.
Days of rain and overcast made me look for and appreciate light in new ways… “You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone…”
December 11: Sunlight knows how to play in the rain.December 12: A miksang moment 🙂 December 13: Finally, near dusk, sunlight peaks into my study.December 14: K’s hair just glowed in the sun…had to ask to snap a pic!December 15: Sunrise is my insurance card: even on overcast days, there’s still a chance of something special.December 16: Delighted to note the cyclamen remains confident in the sun’s return.
The challenge now becomes to keep the pictures fresh, not to fall back on the familiar.
December 17: Potomac still life.December 18: The Christmas Cactus loves its place in the sun.December 19: Smile!December 20: Even on a very grey day, the light catches in surprising places.December 21: Solstice – there goes the sun, here comes summer!
I like the contrast of the two days above. Light is like that. Isn’t it delightful?
December 22: Arlington National Cemetery study. The wreaths are beautiful but I was drawn to the spare lines.December 23: On the road!December 24: Different kind of on the road today, with a snowy glare 🙂 December 25: Whoops! Missed the sunlight, but the delights took other lovely forms.
And now in to the final stretch. Can’t say I notice the days are getting longer, but the knowledge helps.
December 26: Not my typical winter window view.December 27: Love the late afternoon light on all these different surfaces.December 28: There would be even less visibility but for the light. So I’ll take it.December 29: Morning sun cutting through fog and the balcony furniture.December 30: Sunrise glints off the Capitol. I think this is only visible this time of year when the sun is so far south on the horizon.December 31: I love the abstraction here. Sunlight is delightful!
